US China Chip War Intensifies
The U.S administration under President Donal Trump continues issuing worldwide restrictions on the use of Huawei Technologies artificial intelligence chips prompting Chinese technology entity Tencent
Holdings President Marrtin Lau to reassure its investors and clients that it had previously acquired sufficient quantity of high-end chips to sustain its AI training for generations . Tencent Holdings is headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China . President of Tencent Holdings Martin Lau also shared that the tech giant was exploring ways and seeking resources to boost AI inference efficiency including software optimisation. The U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) in May 2025 issued a new guidance on chips for AI applications restricting anyone, anywhere in the world, from using AI chips from Huawei which is an unprecedented crackdown on Huawei despite the recent tariff war de escalation in the Biden era. The BIS also stated it will issue new regulations in the future to replace the Biden-era ‘AI diffusion rule,’ which would have sorted countries into 3 tiers and imposed limitations on the second and third tiers. Under that rule even friendly countries such as Mexico would have encountered restrictions on the advanced AI chips they could import from the U.S. Recently , as part of its campaign the U.S. administration made it compulsory requiring Nvidia to obtain licenses for exporting its H20 chip to China citing concerns over potential military applications. Nvidia remains a technology company boasting a market capitalisation of $2.6 trillion as of July 30, 2024 and has become one of the world’s most valuable tech and digital companies . The top individual shareholder of Nvidia is Jen-Hsun (“Jensen”) Huang and institutional shareholders are Vanguard Group Inc., and BlackRock Inc. Apprehending a ban many Chinese technology giants had stockpiled billions of dollars’ worth of H20s in advance. This stock of H20s will be be used for the applications that will generate immediate returns such as the advertising business and content recommendation products. Tenvent is exploring compliant chip options available in China or for importation . Tencent Holdings surprisingly displayed better-than-expected quarterly earnings iupto April 2024 on account of the strong performances of its AI-enhanced advertising and evergreen games. In the January-March quarter of 2025 revenue of Tencent Holdings company rose 13% year on year to 180.02 billion yuan ($24.9 billion).
