Canals don’t Smell

The Canals of Amsterdam stretch over 100 kilometers connecting the city to the port and the Canal of the North Sea.The canals don’t smell as the source of water in the canals originates from rivers such as the river Amstel and Zaan. The canals have sea water ingress as well. As it rains in Amsterdam all year around these canals receive and have fresh and odourless water .This canal region is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage. The Seaport of Amsterdam is the fourth largest port in Europe.

Clean up Tourism

Amsterdam’s own population is slightly in excess of 800,000 and was annually frequented by around 20 million tourists.  Low quality tourism primarily focused on its once famed cannabis coffee shops and red-light area and is declining after the city authorities announced plans to impose restrictions on public exhibition of cannabis and its sale and relocation of the red light district.

Clean up Waste

Credit World Economic Forum

Waste including plastics estimated at 42,000 kg floats on or near the surface of the city’s canals and flows into the sea. The waste has to be removed through boats including large amounts of plastic. The city municipality has installed a bubble barrier to prevent it from flowing into the North Sea or rivers and the plastic waste is conveniently diverted and collected. The marine life is conserved as the bubble barrier does not impede the passage of marine life nor of boats.
