President Biden signs Executive Order to implement historic, bipartisan military justice reforms transferring decision-making authority from commanders to specialized, independent military prosecutors in cases of sexual assault, domestic violence and murder by amending the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) , after 73 years.

Strengthening US Military Justice System

Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act last year to ensure prosecutorial decisions are fully independent from the chain of the command as well as to strengthen the military justice system’s response to gender-based violence . The Executive Order is expected to bring about a fundamental shift in the US military justice system .The US President being the Commander in Chief act signifies care , dignity and respect for  families of soldiers both wherever deployed .

Gender Parity in US Navy

Such strengthening of the US military justice system may have been necessitated as the number of female personnel in the forces is increasing on the operational side and lately with the appointment of women as Commander of Naval Overseas Fleets .
