Refugees drown of the Coast of Italy
A woman hailing from the largest province drowned off the coast of Italy last week. She was amongs several aspiring asylum seekers in search of a better life. The woman hailing from an ethnic community was an accomplished sportswoman and had many laurels to her credit. What then compelled her to travel to Turkey transiting through Iran with the final destination being Italy. In her case the final destination became a watery grave.

Seeking Asylum as her son was paralysed
The drowned woman three years back had given birth to a boy with a disability. This is the only province where officials have unlimited medical coverage for themselves and their family members. Yet this hapless mother approached many institutions to assist her in meeting her son’s special medical needs. In this process she was divorced. The woman exhausted all avenues to meet her paralysed son’s medical needs in a honorable manner. Slowly the realisation dawned on her that apart from sanctimonious and unsolicited advice no formal assistance for her disabled son was forthcoming from the formal or private medical healthcare system. Philanthropic organisations it seemed preferred to reach out and remain engaged under the glare of the camera or when pursuing sensational health issues.

No Way Out for the Mother
With all odds piled against her the tear stricken mother reluctantly left her son in a bid to acquire refugee status in any country willing to grant her asylum in the faint hope that she would be able to call over her son to that country and he would be treated in the healthcare system of Italy. Fate had planned otherwise. The unfortunate mothers drowning off the coast of Italy created headlines but failed to move the concerned health policy formulators. In a few days the tragedy will be consigned to a dim memory yet the disability of the son continues and his misery is not over. One can only hope that the health authorities intervene now and provide appropriate health and medical assistance to the child.
