Chinese Reverse Engineering

In 2015 I entered the Power plant of the Three Gorges Dam and innocently asked which turbines are Chinese . To my utter surprise all were General Electric (USA) or Siemens (Germany) make. As BEN TAN articulated .

US manufactured power plants last 10 times longer than Russian and Chinese and obviously cost much more. The US built a $ 3.2 trillion fossil and nuclear power grid that operates 99.9% of the time. Try to Reverse Engineer that . Gas turbines are booked until 2030 at GE, Siemens, and Mitsubishi .Turbine prices have nearly tripled since 2019 as each AI data center needs power and every gas plant needs a turbine. And every turbine has one part that bottlenecks the entire industry which is the blade. The turbine blade has to survive in gas 500° C above the melting point of the metal it’s made from and spin at up to 20,000 RPM under 10,000 g of centrifugal force. Each blade is grown as a single crystal of nickel superalloy, pulled through a vacuum furnace at 3 mm per minute. A set of turbine blades costs $ 600,000 and takes 90 weeks to grow. The same metallurgy powers modern jet engines. Recently the Chinese acquired a Russian fighter engine, took it apart, and copied every part. Their copy ran 30 hours between engine overhauls versus 400 for the original whereas modern Western engines run 4,000 hours . Reverse engineering the shape of a turbine blade is one aspect. Reverse engineering 60 years of metallurgy is not as simple as it sounds.
