Types of ships

Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC): cost $ 250 Million / Length 416 M

Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC): cost $ 150 M / at 330 M

Suezmax: costs $ 120 Million / at 290 M

Aframax: cost $ 90 M / at 250 M

Panamax: cost $ 60 M/ at 150 M

Journey costs

A VLCC leaving Qatar and bound for China , journey is about 15 – 20 days . The hydrocarbon Cargo may be worth about $120 – 160 Million  and cost of ship $ 120 – 150 Million

Ship Turning

Turning can take up to 5 km or more . A loaded supertanker traveling at 16 knots (30 km/h) may require several kilometers to come to a complete stop.  Typically crew of 20-30 operates a tanker carrying millions of barrels of oil.

Ship Creates Own Weather

Propellers are huge exceeding 10 meters in diameter, taller than a three storey building . Ships create own Weather as Large tankers can generate powerful air turbulence and wake patterns . The ships bow waves can be several meters high and can damage berths if stone pitching of submerged pattern is not done / berth fortified

Ship Fuel Cost

Fuel consumption can exceed 100 tonnes of fuel / day on large voyages with operating costs reaching USD $ 50,000 / day

LNG tankers are giant thermoses carrying natural gas at -162°C (-260°F) and LNG ships cargo tanks are insulated so well that the boil-off gas (which evaporates) is actually used as fuel.

At times shuttle tankers do not anchor using dynamic positioning (thrusters and GPS) to hover next to offshore platforms, loading oil even in rough seas and requiring no mooring lines
